CofE bars Tutu’s gay priest daughter from conducting funeral – Times of India

LONDON: The Church of England on Friday confirmed it had barred the daughter of Nobel Prize winner Desmond Tutu from conducting a funeral service as a result of she is married to a girl.
Mpho Tutu van Furth is an ordained priest within the Episcopal Church in the US, which permits same-sex marriage.
However the Church of England doesn’t permit its monks to enter into same-sex marriages, saying it goes towards its instructing that marriage can solely be between a person and a girl.
Identical-sex marriages turned authorized in England in 2013.
Tutu van Furth instructed the BBC that she had been requested to officiate on the funeral of her godfather Martin Kenyon, who had wished her to tackle the function.
However the native Church of England diocese vetoed this and Kenyon’s household moved the funeral from a church to a tent to permit Tutu van Furth to officiate.
“It appeared actually churlish and hurtful,” she was quoted as telling the broadcaster.
The Diocese of Hereford instructed AFP in an announcement: “We acknowledge this can be a tough scenario. Recommendation was given in step with the Home of Bishops present steering on same-sex marriage.”
Tutu van Furth had beforehand in 2016 misplaced her licence to preside at holy communion, weddings, baptisms or funerals in South Africa after she married Marceline Tutu van Furth, an Amsterdam-based professor specialising in paediatric infections.
Her father, who died final 12 months, was the previous archbishop of Cape City and hero of the anti-apartheid wrestle who acquired the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.
Tutu additionally confronted the Anglican Church over its stance on homosexual rights, saying in 2013: “I’d not worship a God who’s homophobic and that’s how deeply I really feel about this.”
